Gungu Bama is recognised as a member of the Juru and Kojimol peoples, bringing more than 35 years of expertise in ceremony, education, and cultural performance. Based on the north side of Brisbane, he has facilitated a wide range of cultural activities locally, across Queensland, interstate, and internationally.
His contributions include assisting with ceremonial responsibilities such as cultural blessings, smoking ceremonies, and religious events including christenings and masses. Gungu develops comprehensive cultural programs for schools and health services and serves as a mentor at the university level, with a particular focus on the social determinants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
Born on Waiben and raised in Innisfail, within the lands of the Gulngay people, Gungu frequently visited family in Ayr and Bowen, experiences which strengthened his appreciation for family, culture, ceremony, and country. His connection to the land was further developed through fishing, hunting, and swimming in beaches and mountain streams. Living in proximity to the Kuku Yalanji community led to an interest in the Yiggy Yiggy traditions from a young age.
In his late teens, Gungu received instruction in Yiggy Yiggy and Birri Gubba song and dance from his maternal uncles, deepening his cultural knowledge and experience. Following the passing of his uncles, Gungu has continued his dedicated service to the Aboriginal community in north Meanjin.
Gungu remains strongly committed to community engagement and empowerment, reinforcing the belief that collective strength supports ongoing success.
