Thomas Pedro is a proud Wagadagam man from Wug Village, Moa Island, whose artistry, music,
and community service reflect his deep cultural pride and commitment to his people. A
talented artist and dedicated Police Liaison Officer, Thomas is the only Police Liaison Officer attached to the Thursday Island Water Police, where he leads marine search
and rescue operations and educates communities across the Torres Strait about marine safety.
Before joining the Queensland Police Service, Thomas worked as a crocodile and reptile
handler at the Billabong Sanctuary in Townsville — a role that strengthened his connection to
his totem, the Koedal (Crocodile).
As an artist, Thomas is celebrated for his intricate craftsmanship of traditional Torres Strait
Islander headdresses (Dhoeri/Dhari), a cultural symbol of unity, strength, and identity
proudly displayed on the Torres Strait Flag. His dedication to preserving and sharing this
cultural art form was recognised when he won the 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award
for his masterpiece Ngagalag.
Beyond art, Thomas is an accomplished musician and DJ, using music as a tool to connect
and uplift his community. As a member of the band Reggae Bliss, he has released songs with his twin brother such
as Gumma and Give Thanks, which celebrate life, culture, and gratitude. He also organises
Blue Light Discos across the Torres Strait, creating safe, joyful spaces for young people to
gather and dance.
